About the Item

Early 20th century French neoclassical style demilune cabinet commode. Louis XVI style assuredly by one of the major Parisian makers in the early 20th century producing extremely fine reproductions. Long central drawer flanked by faux drawers over pair of cabinet doors revealing 4 graduated drawers, flanked by narrow single shelf cabinets. Each satinwood door panel painted with diaphanous winged musicians dancers. The whole of the satinwood surfaces are crossbanded in kingwood with ebony boxwood stringing. Gilt bronze mounts highlight the surfaces. Gilt bronze sabots pulls. Mahogany secondary wood. We have not removed the top to check for a signature, however, a label on the back reads: The Metropolitan Museum, Subject to the Life Estate, Bernard M. Baruch, Acc.No. 60.136.2 (label losses to right edge). Paneled back construction. Some restoration work done after a 1990s move from London to Chapel Hill. Cracks typical of the form minor veneer loss repairs. Provenance: Jonathan Harris, London, 6/18/98, BADA CINDA member to the Dr. John Fryer Collection (London Chapel Hill). 58 1/8" w., 17.75" d., 36 3/8" h.
