About the Item

The George III design, named after the English monarch, is characterized by clean lines and high-quality wood. This Circa 1760 chest is crafted entirely from mahogany, featuring three graduated drawers lined with white pine. The drawer fronts are veneered in flame mahogany and adorned with their original brass handles. Many craftsmen favored mahogany for its durability and rich coloring. Given the expense of procuring mahogany, items made from this wood were typically intended for affluent buyers. Petite chests like this one often include a discreet brushing slide at the top, which pulls out with a small brass knob to reveal a surface for laying out clothes to be brushed before wearing. These gentleman’s chests, introduced as 'dressing chests,' are the historical precursors to ‘bachelor’s chests.’ Additional features include vertical side trim with swirling vine motifs and acanthus leaves emerging from carved canted corners, as well as bracket feet. Overall, this is a stunning chest that fits seamlessly into any room and serves multiple purposes: as a bedroom dresser, bathroom or hallway commode, or dining room storage. Condition:
Repaired: The top has inconspicous stains and a repair to the right top corner (see images). The bottom drawer has an inconspicous repair next to the lock and wear next to the handles (see images). Wear consistent with age and use. Condition conmensurate with age: deep scratches and knicks on both sides (see images), and top. The back shows separation on two of the boards (see images) but is intact.
