About the Item
This elegant antique chest of drawers dates to the late 18th to early 19th century and reflects strong Hepplewhite and early Federal influence, a refined American furniture style prized for its clean lines and graceful proportions. Crafted in richly figured solid mahogany with hand-planed pine secondary wood, this piece embodies the fine craftsmanship of early American cabinetmaking.
The chest features a four-drawer configuration, each fitted with its original oval brass bail pulls and brass-escutcheon keyholes—a wonderful survival that adds both authenticity and value. The drawers are constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, clearly visible from the side views, confirming early production. The interior drawer wood shows natural aging and oxidation consistent with 18th–early 19th century furniture.
The top is made from broad mahogany boards with a warm, naturally aged patina, showing honest wear that enhances its character and tells its story. The scalloped bracket base is a particularly charming detail, grounding the piece with visual elegance while remaining true to early American design.
Condition
Structurally sound and sturdy. All drawers glide smoothly. Original hardware intact (Except for lower left hardware which is a replacement). Surface shows age-appropriate wear, including light scratches, small marks, and rich color variation to the finish—exactly what collectors seek in an authentic antique rather than an over-restored piece.
