About the Item

A most decorative and high quality French 19th century Louis XV st. Japanese Lacquer, Ormolu and Marble commode. The stunning two drawer commode is raised by cabriole legs ending with elegant pierced Ormolu sabots and top Ormolu mounts of scrolled acanthus leaves. The scalloped apron is richly decorated by a central pierced Ormolu reserve with a cabochon in the center flanked by scrolled acanthus leaves. Above are the two Sans Traverse (without crossbar) drawers displaying wonderfully detailed Gilt foliate decoration of birds and butterflies. The wonderful scenes continue onto both sides of the commode with similar foliate designs of birds perched on foliate branches. The top drawer showcases a central Ormolu keyhole escutcheon with its original interior lock, which secures both drawers at the same time, while fitted by scrolled foliate Ormolu handles. Above is the original and impressive Breche de Saint-Maxmin marble top with a mottled edge.
