About the Item
Exquisite Louis XV-Louis XVI Transition style chest, made around 1800 in France. It features an impressive marble top resting on a mixed-linear structure and two large drawers, with twin circular handles chiseled in gilt bronze, along with a keyhole and a central keyhole of great importance. The chest stands on galvanized legs, the two front ones with sablots, and is finished with a small skirt. However, this piece stands out for the marquetry on three sides, which uses different precious woods, providing a rich tonal variety to the proposed Renaissance-style pattern, reminiscent of musical instruments and cornucopias. Fine lines typical of the period, a chest of drawers of the highest quality, worthy of a place of honor in the home.
Transitional Style
Made at the very moment of transition between Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, during this period, characteristics of both styles were blended, as seen in this piece. Louis XV is identified with Rococo, featuring more profuse and detailed decoration, while Louis XVI contrasts with the former due to its simplicity, which once again appreciates the rigor of geometric forms and straight lines, inspired directly by classical architecture. It is characterized by lightness, harmony, and proportion, leaving aside the heaviness and excess of the styles it follows. It stands as a more discreet and elegant style.
