About the Item

A 19th-century French miniature commode in walnut, constructed with the same vocabulary found on full-scale provincial furniture. The case is shaped with a softly rounded top, chamfered corners, and a scalloped apron resting on short cabriole legs. Each drawer front is framed with applied molded decoration in a Louis XV silhouette, giving the piece a sculptural, architectural rhythm despite its small size. The walnut has developed a warm, honeyed surface with the expected variations and darker oxidation in the recesses. Brass knobs add a simple, bright counterpoint. The sides are paneled with arched molded reserves, further echoing period provincial design. Miniature pieces like this were often produced as models, apprentice work, or decorative accessories for the salon—useful today for jewelry, documents, bedside storage, or as an accent object on a console or desk. Its presence is strong: it reads as a true commode, just scaled for display. A well-proportioned, authentic 19th-century miniature with unmistakably French lines.
