About the Item

An exquisite Rococo-revival bombé kingwood commode / chest of drawers, dating to circa 1880, Paris, France. An exceptional piece in the Louis XV style, crafted with remarkable finesse and attention to detail by the renowned Parisian ébéniste Gervais Maximilien Eugène Durand (1839–1920). The commode features a beautifully shaped bombé silhouette, with gloss polished top, front and back, allowing it to be placed freely within a room. The top is finished with a quartered veneer pattern, while the sides display finely executed floral marquetry veneer inlays. The piece contains four drawers, each drawer front upholstered with embossed leather panels in brown and gold. Particularly striking are the exquisitely chiseled ormolu gilt-bronze mounts, handles, and feet, all crafted from solid fire-gilded bronze. Overall, the craftsmanship reflects the highest standards of 19th-century Parisian cabinetmaking, visible in every minute detail (please refer to close-up images). The body of the chest and each of the four drawers are stamped “G. Durand.” The piece remains in unrestored, original condition and is in remarkably well-preserved, well-cared condition considering its age. We have intentionally chosen not to restore it, as we believe preserving its authenticity best honors the integrity of the piece. We have taken care to present the condition as accurately as possible in the photographs. Dimensions: Width 28" · Height 20" · Depth 11.5" Gervais Maximilien Eugène Durand (1839–1920) was a leading Parisian master cabinetmaker based in the legendary Faubourg Saint-Antoine, the historic heart of Parisian luxury furniture production. He specialized in Louis XV, Louis XVI, and Régence revival furniture, known for refined marquetry, sculptural detail, and museum-quality ormolu bronze mounts. Working in the tradition of André-Charles Boulle, Jean-Henri Riesener, Adam Weisweiler, and François Linke, Durand exemplified the pinnacle of 19th-century French furniture craftsmanship. His work was exhibited at the Paris Expositions Universelles of 1889 and 1900, where he received prestigious awards and international acclaim. Today, furniture stamped G. Durand is highly coveted by collectors of Parisian antiques, Belle Époque design, and fine gilt-bronze mounted cabinetry.
