About the Item
A George II Mahogany Bachelor’s Chest of Drawers with Tooled Green Leather Skiver Brushing Slide, Circa 1750
A fine George II period mahogany bachelor’s chest of drawers of small proportions. The oblong, solid mahogany top is beautifully figured and finished with a moulded edge. Beneath is a pull-out brushing slide inset with a traditional green leather hide skiver, decorated with a tooled and gilt border, and fitted with small brass knob handles.
Below are four full-width, graduated drawers with moulded edges, brass double swan-neck handles, oval plate escutcheons, and locks. The chest stands on a moulded base and shaped bracket feet. The oak-lined drawers feature bases running front to back, typical of 18th-century cabinetmaking practice.
A quality piece throughout, this chest is in good working order and well presented. It has been carefully serviced in our workshop, sensitively cleaned, and wax polished — now very much ready for use.
Dimensions (Approximate):
Height: 84 cm (33")
Width: 96.5 cm (38")
Depth: 51.75 cm (20.375")
Condition:
This chest of drawers is in good condition, commensurate with its age. Structurally sound and sturdy, with several small marks and blemishes consistent with use and history. Minor, high-quality running repairs have been undertaken where necessary. All drawers run smoothly, there are no loose joints, and the piece has been fully serviced and wax polished. Ready for everyday use.
As with all antique furniture, wear, marks, and signs of age should be expected and are part of its enduring character.
