About the Item
An uncommonly sized, very attractive, useful and versatile Georgian mahogany chest of drawers of good quality in lovely antique condition. Made in England in the early 19th Century, this charmingly compact chest of drawers would work wonderfully in a variety of settings and will add bygone quality and a superb antique aesthetic to any interior.
Traditionally hand-crafted from beautifully grained solid mahogany showing lovely, aged colouring, this handy storage piece is reassuringly and surprisingly heavy for a compact chest of drawers. It features three good-sized oak-lined drawers of varying height, complete with attractive double brass handles and ‘dummy’ locks to add a decorative flourish.
It has a large and usefully sized single-piece top with moulded bordering and is supported by a lovely mid-Georgian, tier-moulded base of legs with shapely three-sided aprons.
Smaller Georgian chests of drawers are often called Bachelor’s Chests, although this one seems narrower than most and we wonder if it would have originally been used in a study or library or as a bedside chest for a lofty bed. Its compact size makes it extremely versatile for use in a hallway, office, living room or bedroom.
All in all this is a rare, extremely attractive and useful mahogany chest of drawers, which will add bygone Georgian character and quality as well as antique colour and charm to any setting.
CONDITION
This lovely chest of drawers is in good-to-very-good antique condition. Solid, sturdy and structurally sound, it is reassuringly heavy at over 30kg and has to-be-expected wear, knocks and bumps to show its not inconsiderable age. Not uncommonly, the Georgian brass handles look to be a later replacement/improvement and it has been polished to look its best. Overall it’s a charmingly attractive Georgian piece in lovely antique condition, and if well looked after it should remain just as fabulous and useful for many more generations to come – please see the photos.

Regency Davenport Desk Flame Mahogany 1830s Georgian Freemans Fine Country House
By William Freeman, Jeremiah and William Freeman
Located in London, GB
A beautiful, special and very rare flame mahogany Georgian Davenport in wonderful condition. Made by heralded furniture makers Freemans of Norwich, most likely in the 1830s, this fabulous and very much still highly usable Davenport will add superb quality, beautiful colour and bygone sophistication to any interior.
Beautifully crafted from flame mahogany, this Davenport is extremely solid and reassuringly heavy. It features a sliding locking desktop ideal for storing a laptop and papers, four large locking drawers to the left side with dummy drawers to the right and a pull-out inkwell drawer complete with ink bottle. A beautiful and extremely rare feature are the pair of concealed slide-out candle holder ledges, much-needed for late-night 19th Century letter writing – this is the only Davenport we know of to have these.
The sloping desk is adorned with the original racing green leather centrepiece with gold embellishments and has a bordered flat upper ledge. The front is decorated with four beautiful Corinthian carvings, most likely by William Freeman snr, who was renowned for his superb carving work. It has an impressive and imposing, shapely, Romanesque base and is set on attractive gadroon-mounted wheels for ease of movement.
The drawers and dummy drawers have beautiful handles and brass-fronted locks and inside the desk are two opening upper drawers and two lower dummy drawers (where the inkwell slides behind). It has the Freemans stencil to the underside of one the drawers and has pencil marks underneath the base which appears to read “Palmer SC23”, which we haven’t been able to definitively trace but might indicate that it was built for General Charles Palmer, MP for Bath in the early 19th Century, who was married in 1823.
Freemans of Norwich were a family of celebrated furniture makers based in the city around the first half of the 19th Century – father William and sons...
