About the Item

A stunning and most decorative Italian 19th century Louis XV st. Walnut and Ormolu commode. This exquisite bombee shaped three drawer commode is raised on stout cabriole legs fitted with foliate Ormolu sabots below the arbalest shaped apron accented with a central and pierced Ormolu mount. The three "Sans Traverse" without cross bar drawers showcase the cabinet makers high level of skill with exceptional marquetry flowing across all drawers, and with each drawer entered by a foliate pierced keyhole escutcheon. The impressive marquetry depicts classical figures surrounded by inlaid foliate scrolls, while to each side of the top drawer are richly chased foliate Ormolu mounts. Each side of the chest displays large scale foliate marquetry framed within a delicate border. Above is the striking top with a crest shaped marquetry centered by a foliate bouquet and surrounded by scrolled foliage and geometric designs before the ogee edge.
