About the Item

This refined chest of drawers dates to the mid–late 18th century and originates from the Emilia region in northern Italy, an area renowned for its sophisticated cabinetmaking tradition and refined marquetry production during the late Baroque and Rococo periods. The piece reflects the Louis XV style, interpreted through a distinctly Emilian approach that favours measured proportions, clarity of design, and decorative restraint. The structure is articulated with cherrywood uprights and drawer guides, providing strength and structural coherence, while the sides are executed in walnut, selected for its stability and rich chromatic depth. The surfaces are enriched with finely crafted geometric marquetry panels composed of maple and cherry, arranged in a rhythmic checkerboard pattern characteristic of northern Italian furniture from the second half of the 18th century. This refined interplay of woods highlights both technical mastery and a sophisticated decorative sensibility. The chest rests on gently shaped cabriole legs, a defining feature of the Louis XV style, which lend the piece a sense of lightness and visual movement while maintaining overall balance. Original metal fittings, including escutcheons and handles, are preserved and contribute to the authenticity and historical integrity of the piece. The chest of drawers is in very good condition. It has been professionally restored and refinished by our internal atelier, with a conservation-led approach aimed at preserving original materials, patina, and construction techniques. The structure is sound, the marquetry remains crisp and legible, and the finish has been carefully renewed without compromising the character of the piece.
