This elegant and refined French chest of drawers features two spacious and deep drawers. The handles, made of cast bronze, are finely crafted with intricate details. To maintain height symmetry, each drawer is adorned with a decorative faux keyhole. The top is embellished with a delicately contoured edge, while the slightly cabriole legs seamlessly integrate into the structure. Thanks to its well-balanced proportions, this chest of drawers can also be used as a large bedside table.
Crafted in the Neoclassical Louis XV style between 1760 and 1764 by an artisan workshop in Liffon-le-Grand, a town in the Vosges department of the Grand Est region of France, an area renowned for its woodworking tradition. Although it was made during the reign of Louis XV, from 1750 until the king’s death, a new furniture style began to emerge, known in France as Louis XVI and throughout Europe as Neoclassical. This style drew inspiration from classical antiquity, emphasizing harmony and proportion, favoring straight lines, and reducing ornamentation. The refined and orderly Louis XVI Neoclassical style was officially recognized even before the king’s coronation in 1774.
Its balanced proportions, symmetry, and ideal dimensions make this piece a valuable and versatile addition to any interior. The chest of drawers has been meticulously restored by a skilled cabinetmaker in Florence, Italy, using traditional woodworking techniques passed down through generations—an expertise that, unfortunately, is becoming increasingly rare. Thanks to this careful restoration, the piece is in excellent condition.
