About the Item

France, circa 1890 Attributed to a fine Parisian or Lyonnais atelier, in the manner of Maison Krieger or J.E. Bernard Dimensions: 32" H × 29" W × 14.5" D A finely carved French Louis XV/XVI transitional–style walnut commode, featuring a loose variegated Brèche Violette marble top with rich swirls of rouge, gray, and cream. The four drawers are intricately carved with trellis and floral motifs framed by beaded moldings and fluted stiles, raised on elegant cabriole legs ending in scroll feet. The piece exhibits the craftsmanship and design language associated with the Parisian and Lyonnais ateliers of the late 19th century, notably in the manner of Maison Krieger or J.E. Bernard, known for their refined carved walnut interpretations of 18th-century models. Provenance: The Iris Apfel Collection Condition: Good overall condition. One drawer pull loose. Minor cracks and edge chips to the marble, small veneer losses, and scattered nicks and scuffs consistent with age and use. Presents beautifully. About Iris Apfel: Iris Apfel (1921–2024) was an American style icon, interior designer, and businesswoman celebrated for her maximalist aesthetic, fearless use of color, and eclectic approach to design. With her husband Carl Apfel, she founded Old World Weavers, a textile firm specializing in historic reproductions and restoration projects for the White House under nine presidents. Her personal collection, celebrated in exhibitions such as Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Apfel Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, reflects her philosophy that “more is more and less is a bore.” This commode, from her private collection, embodies the layered elegance and historic sensibility that defined her world of design.
