About the Item

Marburg finch chest Biedermeier around 1800/10, cherry wood and other precious woods richly veneered and marquetry on an oak body, hunting motif, 2 small drawers in the base area, original lock and fittings, handles on the sides, restored condition, shellac polish Dimensions: Height: 77 cm - Width: 150 cm - Depth: 67.5 cm A treasure chest for the bride Before furniture was manufactured industrially, it was extremely valuable. Each piece was unique, made by hand by a cabinetmaker. Furniture was inherited or bought second-hand. New furniture was only bought for weddings if you could afford it. Around 1800, wealthy farmers had a new marriage bed, a chest and sometimes a table and chairs made as a bridal treasure. Chests played a central role. As treasure chests, they were part of the bridal treasure in a double sense, as the hand-woven linen was transported in them when it came to moving from the parental home to the new home.
