About the Item

This is a chest of drawers by artist and craftsman Max Kuehne (1880–1968), who was known for his landscape paintings, decorative furniture, screens, and frames. It was likely made in the 1940's or 1950's. Kuehne was a versatile artist who worked in both fine art and decorative art. His furniture pieces often feature carved, gessoed, and handpainted decorations with tempera and silver or gold leaf. The decorative motifs on his works were influenced by a variety of cultures, including Spanish, Islamic, and Japanese art. He studied in Europe, and did many of his paintings in Spain, New York and Rockport, MA. Many of his furniture pieces, including screens, tables, beds and cabinets were made in New York. This unusual two drawer dresser features round, tapered legs, and has intricate and colorful floral designs on the drawers. The floral designs are incised, and highlighted with pigments in subtle blues, greens, and reds on a silver leaf background. The piece is signed "Max Kuehne" on the lower edge of a drawer.
