About the Item
Neoclassical period dresser, late 1700s. Made of walnut, it has three drawers on the front, a lower one under top and two contiguous ones with concealed chain that allows continuity of the inlaid scene; truncated pyramid feet. The entire surface is quadripartite rosewood veneer with inlaid candelabra on the uprights, under-top band with reserves inlaid with putti faced while riding dolphins with tails developing into leafy whorls. The central reservation of the front depicts the scene of Hercules slaying the lion, with the club resting at his feet; in the flanks are two allegorical figures , a vestal with a lamb and an elderly man with a staff and sword girded at his side. Walnut interior, replaced marble top.
The furniture is part of the corpus of furnishings identified as the " green fund" workshop. The two figures on the sides correspond to the secretaire published in the volume "Maggiolini
co." and similar correspondences on production furnishings are found in the way the dresser is architecturally composed and in the repeated frames.
