About the Item
Pair of Louis XV Style Paint-Decorated Lingerie Chests, First Half of the 20th Century. Each tall, narrow chest features a serpentine faux-painted marble top above five drawers, hand-decorated in a charming floral and lace motif on a soft yellow ground. The drawers are adorned with gilt foliate pulls, and the bodies stand on elegant cabriole legs ending in scroll feet. The delicate painted decoration—vines of climbing roses and dotted ribbon patterns—evokes the refined romanticism of French provincial style, while the slender silhouette suggests use as lingerie or semainier chests.
Dimensions:
48.25 in. high × 12.25 in. wide × 13 in. deep
Condition:
Good/Fair; with wear consistent with age. Areas of paint loss, surface staining, discoloration, and decorative flaking, particularly to one side panel and tops; one drawer lacking knob. Structurally sound and stable.
Provenance:
From the Iris Apfel Collection, the personal furnishings of the celebrated style icon, designer, and collector (1921–2024). Known for her whimsical eye and love of eclectic interiors, Apfel’s homes blended European antiques, exotic textiles, and witty color. These chests exemplify the feminine romanticism and layered design sensibility that made her spaces so distinctive.
Attribution:
Likely Italian or French, early to mid-20th century, in the manner of Venetian decorative furniture produced in Florence and Verona during the interwar period. Comparable painted chests were retailed by Italian makers such as Fratelli Marelli and C.
