About the Item

A fine pair of Spanish bombe-form chests, each surmounted with a shaped Portuguese marble top. The richly veined marble features soft tones of rose, cream, and taupe, with one top showing a slightly more faded surface from years of natural use and wear—adding authenticity and charm. The bodies are beautifully serpentine, crafted with warm-toned wood veneers arranged in geometric and shaped panels, accented with elaborate gilt-bronze ormolu mounts of scrolling rocaille motifs. Each chest is fitted with two long drawers, the bronze escutcheons and pulls enhancing the elegant curvature of the form. Raised on cabriole legs with ormolu sabots, these chests exemplify 18th-century French Rococo inspiration interpreted through Spanish craftsmanship. The combination of Spanish cabinetmaking with Portuguese marble tops reflects the close artistic and trade connections of the Iberian Peninsula during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their scale and sculptural presence make them ideal as statement pieces in an entry, living room, or bedroom.
