About the Item

Philadelphia federal chest of drawers in mahogany, American, circa 1815. Full column with well-articulated carvings, including capitals and feet. Original wood knobs, banded drawer fronts and working locks. Bookmatched crotch mahogany veneer over poplar. American Federal and Empire antiques from mid and north Atlantic seaboard cities such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore can be really well crafted and beautiful examples of cabinetry in the world market from 1810-1840. We try and find the most beautiful examples or forms and then go about revealing the extraordinary veneers (mostly mahogany) that were being employed at that time. Much of this urban furniture has been overlooked because the finishes have amalgamated over time and the wood grains have been obscured. We feel that our restored American Federal and early Empire antiques are second to none and are a great value, to be admired side by side with English Regency, French Louis Philippe, Danish Christian VIII or Swedish Carl Johann. Great forms, extraordinary woods, well-crafted and well-articulated carvings. Chest of drawers has been restored. We replaced and repaired missing or damaged veneers. Re-glued all loose joints, made drawers operable by re-building drawer rails when necessary. Original varnish finish has been preserved by using amalgamator to melt back top coats of old dark varnish and alligator surface. Chest was then finished with a light French polish and hard wax. We are careful in our restoration to maintain the original integrity of the antiques and to retain the warmth, depth and age of the mahogany. (We never use contemporary finishing materials like lacquer.) Measures: 44" wide, 23 1/2" deep, 42 3/4" high.

Repaired: minor repairs to venner. Refinished. Wear consistent with age and use. The wooden knobs were original to the chest. All drawers have original escutcheon key hole brasses, and locks. Well articulated carvings. All elements are original, feet columns etc. Beautifully restored! Ready to ship.
