About the Item

A striking example of post-modern design by John Stuart, this gentlemen’s chest marries gracious scale with finely considered detail. Crafted in honey-toned oak, the chest features four spacious upper drawers, the uppermost concealed behind delicately woven cane fronts, and two larger drawers below that capaciously hold garments or linens. The cane adds visual texture, lending an airy contrast to the solidity of oak. Chrome trim highlights edges and drawer faces, shimmering in light and reinforcing the post-modern design references. Chrome handles and the gleaming metal detail throughout raise its drama and sophistication. This chest is in very clean condition. The caning is intact throughout; there are some minor flaws on the sides and the trim—light scratches, gentle wear—that attest to genuine vintage life without undermining the piece’s integrity or beauty. The craftsmanship is excellent, dovetailed joints, solid drawer bottoms, and smooth mechanics of the drawers affirm John Stuart’s reputation for quality. Designed in an era when furniture was meant to make a statement, this chest delivers both functional storage and decorative impact. In interiors that favor layering of texture—wood and cane, metal and grain—it becomes a focal anchor. It works beautifully against soft neutrals or boldly colored walls, paired with modern lighting, sculptural accessories, or in a dressing room that values both elegance and capacity. Collectible value grows from its provenance: John Stuart was instrumental in bringing Danish modernism and high-end post-modern aesthetics into mid-20th-century American design. Pieces like this chest, which combine craftsmanship, statement design, and mixed materials (wood, cane, chrome), are increasingly sought after by discerning collectors and interiors that prize authenticity and artistic presence. 40.25″ Wide x 19 5/8″ Deep x 56.5″ High Both dressers are in very clean condition. Some minor flaws on side of dresser and on chrome trim. No breaks in caning. About John Stuart: John Stuart joined the John Widdicomb Company as Director and Sales Manager in 1929. He later became General Manager and Vice President and in 1943 he was named President of John Widdicomb. Shortly after John Stuart, Inc. was formed. It appears it had been a separate company that ran the designer showroom in New York and later in Philadelphia, Chicago and Denmark. John Stuart was responsible for bringing some of the era’s finest Danish Modern furniture to the American market. Finn Juhl, Ole Wanscher, Peter Hvidt, Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, and Edvard Kindt-Larsen are just a few of the legendary Danish designers who worked with John Stuart. Count Sigvard Bernadotte, son of the Swedish King Gustav Adolf, also designed for John Stuart. Price is for one dresser. There are two dressers available (sold separately)
