About the Item
19th-Century Edwards
Roberts Stamped Chest of Drawers
A genuine 19th-century chest of drawers stamped by the respected Victorian furnishers Howards
Roberts, London. This authentic period piece features four graduating full-width drawers, each fitted with original brass escutcheons and swan-neck handles, typical of the firm’s mid-Victorian output.
The chest has been finished in a soft, gently distressed painted surface that highlights its age while giving it a calm, neutral look suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors. The craftsmanship is evident throughout — from the solid drawer linings to the clean bracket feet and well-balanced proportions.
A versatile and decorative storage piece for a bedroom, hallway, living room, or design-led interior.

About the Maker
Edwards
Roberts, based in London in the mid-19th century, were known for supplying well-crafted domestic furniture to affluent households. Stamped examples are increasingly collected for both their quality and heritage.
Provenance Story
This 19th-century Edwards
Roberts painted chest of drawers comes from a long-established Sussex home where it had remained in the same family for several generations. According to the previous owners, the chest was originally purchased through Edwards
Roberts’ London showroom in the late Victorian period, when the family were furnishing a newly built country residence.
The piece was positioned for much of its life in an upstairs bedroom overlooking the garden, and its gentle, time-worn patina reflects decades of careful use rather than neglect. The maker’s stamp is still clear and crisp — a testament to the cabinetmaker’s pride and the quality of work produced by Howards
Roberts during their peak years.
As fashions shifted through the 20th century, the chest was lightly refreshed with layers of soft, characterful paint, creating the warm, lived-in surface it has today. The family chose to keep the original brass handles and escutcheons, believing they were “part of the furniture’s soul.”
Recently acquired from the estate, the chest now enters the decorative antiques market for the first time, offering a rare chance to own an authentic, maker-stamped example of English painted furniture with genuine period charm and a traceable family history.

Painted Oak Chest of Four Drawers
Located in Baltimore, MD
What an extraordinary chest of drawers! The top is plain with a bullnose edge and the sides are nicely paneled. The front corners of the case are boldly reeded and toward the top a sprig of lily of the valley is delicately carved inside the reed. Above this is a massive scrolled acanthus leaf corbel, appearing to support the top. The drawers are more or less equal in depth with faux panels created by an applied mitered molding with a bead running round the inside. The knobs are rare; hardly ever seen They are the classic shape of the ceramic knobs found on much Central European vernacular furniture, except these are carved in wood. The gourd-like feet have similar contours.
The oak was finished in dark tones and then was painted over in buttermilk. At some time it was painted white and has worn or been rubbed through to the earlier layers. The result is a delightful piece that need not be confined to the bedroom, but rather can be enjoyed wherever some whimsical storage...
