About the Item

On offer is a marble-topped chest of drawers by the John Widdicomb Company. The design was directly inspired by 18th-century French Provincial aesthetics, specifically the Louis XV period. It was a style known for its emphasis on comfort and graceful curves—exemplified by the delicate cabriole legs and a scalloped apron on this piece. The John Widdicomb Company, a long-standing American furniture manufacturer established in 1897, shifted its focus to these elegant French styles with the help of designers like Ralph Widdicombe starting in the early 20th century. Their pieces are known for their durability, attention to detail, such as dovetail joinery, and ability to blend with both traditional and French country interiors, making them desirable vintage items. However while this line was typically ordered with a clear wood finish at the time of manufacture, many vintage pieces have since been professionally refinished in various colors, such as the gray/black available in this piece. And because of this slate gray hue and the black marble top, this dresser would also be a standout today in a contemporary gray-hued interior. Perhaps yours? Maker’s mark: (photo #5)
