About the Item

The tracery panels on this oak corner cabinet vitrine were hand-carved during the Gothic period. A very talented French ebeniste incorporated the repurposed carvings into this two-body corner cabinet, which dates to either 1870 or 1876 (see carving mark in the detail photo). Three tracery panels adorn each of the angled sides of the upper body, with all six panels having distinct carvings. Two more panels, once again with separate motifs, form the bottom of the upper section, beneath a pair of shaped glass that is surrounded by deep cavetto. Trefoil spandrels fill each of the curved corners, beneath a crown of repeating leaf cups over roundels threaded by a single thin molding. The doors open to reveal three shelves, allowing for a variety of small accessories to be placed, such as figurines, books, or painted plates. A drop door, comprised of three more different tracery panels, opens on the deeper and wider lower section, revealing a single shelf. As with the upper body, each angled side is embellished with a period Gothic tracery panel that terminates above the thick plinth with deep cavetto. Our 19th-century corner cabinet was constructed from oak wood that has been stripped more recently, giving the wood a beige color, which matches the hue of the period Gothic panels. This phenomenal corner cabinet vitrine can be used wherever a case piece is needed for a corner, such as in an entry hall, living room, or bar area.
