This extraordinary storage cabinet with drop-down desk and hanging shelf/bookcase, made in the 1950s, is a unique example of 20th-century Italian craftsmanship excellence. The frame, made of fine blond wood, is enriched with elegant brass details that enhance its refinement and elegance. The furniture's clean lines and geometric shapes clearly recall the distinctive style of Studio BBPR, a celebrated architecture and design firm founded in Milan in 1932 by Gian Luigi Banfi, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti and Ernesto Nathan Rogers. Although this piece was probably commissioned and therefore unique, the influence of Studio BBPR is evident in the stylistic choices and construction details, although there is no documentation to attest to this.
The upper part of the cabinet features a hanging bookcase with open shelves, ideal for displaying books and art objects. In the center, a drop-down desk provides a functional work surface that, when closed, maintains the clean, uncluttered aesthetic of the design. The lower part consists of drawers and storage compartments, providing ample space for organizing documents and other personal items. This piece of furniture is not only a visually striking piece of furniture, but also a manifesto of Italian craftsmanship from the 1950s, a period when designers and architects such as those at Studio BBPR helped define the language of modern design through the use of high-quality materials and meticulous attention to detail.
