About the Item
An outstanding Louis XVI corner cabinet from around 1780, masterfully veneered in nutwood, maple and ebony on a solid oak corpus. The top is richly decorated with a fine marquetry scene depicting Mercury, god of trade, surrounded by floral and geometric motifs, all executed with remarkable precision. The frieze is adorned with landscape and hunting scenes, while vertical floral bands and fluted pilasters with gilt-bronze capitals accentuate the elegant architectural structure. Behind the curved tambour doors, the interior reveals practical shelves and a narrow drawer above, combining refined design with functionality. The cabinet’s craftsmanship and stylistic harmony suggest a South German or French origin. With its deep polish, warm patina, and perfectly preserved marquetry, this corner cabinet represents the sophisticated elegance of late 18th-century furniture making. A rare and decorative collector’s piece of outstanding artistic quality.
