This pair of 18th-century English corner cabinets demonstrates the superb craftsmanship of master cabinetmakers of the period.
Often referred to as encoignures or coignades, the cabinets are crowned with triangular marble tops, the softly veined cream stone edged with a finely cast ormolu border.
The fronts are richly decorated with intricate parquetry, the lockable doors inlaid with striking geometric patterns. A variety of woods were carefully selected to create a vivid contrast of colours, with bold zig-zag designs framed by delicate banding. Each corner is further embellished with an ormolu rosette, while the sides echo the same decorative language, ensuring balance and cohesion across the design.
Opening the curved doors reveals a generous storage space fitted with two shelves, combining beauty with practicality. Each cabinet stands gracefully on three shaped legs, giving strength and stability to the overall form.
A great example of 18th-century English furniture, this pair not only reflects refined artistry and elegance but also provides functional storage.
