About the Item
Dress up the corners of a dining room, living room, or library with this elegant pair of tall Louis XV period corner cabinets. Crafted in Lyon, France, circa 1760, and built from solid fruitwood, each “Encoignure” (corner cupboard) was fashioned using both doors of an original Armoire Lyonnaise, repurposed with remarkable artistry and proportion.
Each cabinet stands on short scroll feet over a scalloped apron centered by a carved medallion motif. The doors are richly decorated with hand-carved shell, acanthus, and floral motifs in deep relief, framed by sinuous molding typical of the Lyonnaise Rocaille style. The bonnet top features a shaped cornice adorned with foliate and shell carvings. Inside, three fitted shelves provide ample and practical storage.
Both corner cupboards are complete with their original 18th-century iron locks and large working keys, and retain an exquisite walnut-toned patina with a warm, luminous finish. These versatile cabinets make a refined and symmetrical statement in traditional or transitional interiors.
