About the Item

Presenting a superb French Louis XVI–style paint-decorated corner cabinet signed Millet, a refined and beautifully crafted piece that perfectly embodies the elegance and artistry of late 19th-century Parisian furniture. Measuring 40 1/4" high x 27" wide x 17 3/4" deep, this compact yet luxurious cabinet features a shaped white marble top with molded edge, resting above an exquisitely paint-decorated body enriched with finely cast gilt brass mounts. The cabinet’s front door is adorned with an enchanting hand-painted pastoral scene, depicting a reclining gentleman serenading a seated lady beneath lush trees—an homage to the Rococo revival and the romantic fêtes galantes made famous by Watteau and Fragonard. Ornate gilt floral appliqués frame the painted panel, continuing along the fluted sides and corners with classical Louis XVI motifs. The cabinet opens to reveal one interior shelf, offering practical storage within its artful form. Raised on tapered legs with bronze sabots, this corner cabinet is ideal for bedrooms, salons, hallways, and intimate decorative spaces. The piece is signed Millet, referring to Maison Millet, one of the most prestigious Parisian ateliers of the 19th century. Founded in 1853 by Théodore Millet, the firm specialized in luxurious meubles de style inspired by the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Millet was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and became renowned for their superlative bronze mounts, fine marquetry, and museum-level craftsmanship. Their pieces graced royal residences, aristocratic estates, and elite collectors throughout Europe. Condition: Expected age-related wear including oxidation to bronze, scratches, minor stains and small edge chips to the marble, and light finish loss. These characteristics are consistent with its history and add authentic antique charm. A signed Millet masterpiece—compact, elegant, and exceptionally collectible.
