About the Item

This distinguished sideboard exemplifies the refined yet imaginative spirit of early 20th-century German design. The piece features four doors—two on the left and two on the right—organized around a striking central figure carved from a wax model by Lotte Pritzel. The cabinet’s façade, executed in richly grained veneer, exhibits a quiet architectural rigor. The restrained surfaces amplify the visual tension between planar clarity and sculptural animation. The Pritzel figure introduces a graceful vertical accent—an ethereal dancer captured in motion—imbuing the whole with poetic vitality. The geometric volumes of the legs, with their stepped details, reinforce the modern expression typical of Berlin-Deko, aligning the piece stylistically with the sensibility of Fritz August Breuhaus. Breuhaus's designs favored understated elegance and balanced proportion. Originally conceived for a dining room, the sideboard's versatile scale and generous surface lend it equally well to a study or atelier. Beyond storage, it offers an ideal workspace capable of accommodating documents, tools, equipment, or materials while maintaining a composed decorative presence. The dancing figures seem to capture the essence of expressive dance, particularly the choreography of Mary Wigman (1886– 1973), who sought to make visible the inner experience of the human body. Fritz August Breuhaus, who had worked with Pritzel’s dolls before World War I, designed the new home for Alexander Koch in 1925. Here Pritzel’s work was displayed on an Asian sideboard. As Oskar Kaufmann had done, the designer of these two sideboards incorporated sculpture into the furniture. Here, however, the expressive movement is combined with Asian-inspired forms. This sideboard is a rare testament to Berlin’s artistic milieu of the interwar period, where design, performance, and craftsmanship converged. The interplay between disciplined form and the lyrical figure at its center makes the piece uniquely expressive—poised between practicality and reverie, modernity and fantasy. It is a compelling anchor for a thoughtfully designed interior and a remarkable collector's item with strong historical significance.
