About the Item

A remarkable black and cream lacquered Jean Pascaud sideboard, circa 1940. The body, finished in the deepest of black lacquers contrasts beautifully with the cream lacquered doors, indented with a diamond and dot pattern. Simple gold bands of gilding frame the front and side: further used on the stunning conical leg that support the cabinet. Large doors open to reveal a sycamore interior with three centrally positioned drawers and shelves to either side. The key is a sculpted brass cockerel and Pascaud with a sense of humour elevates this domestic bird to the pinnacle of design luxury. His work is simple, yet technically ambitious and brilliant; his pieces are impressively large, but aesthetically balanced.
