About the Item
A very charming and rustic French Provincial bread cupboard or panetière in French chestnut. France, circa 1800s. This highly decorated box intended for storing bread has an arched bonnet, cabinet door and aprons embellished with floral, foliate and rocaille carvings, and is encased with vase-ring-and-bulb turnings, topped with trumpet finials. The carved cabriole legs and escargot feet allowed it to rest on a surface, although these cupboards could also be found hanging on a wall. All carvings are done by removing or chipping away at the solid block of wood (as opposed to appliqués which are applied carvings). Has original iron, heart-shaped door pull and back plate.
