About the Item
On offer here is an Exquisite 17th Century Oak Two-Door Cabinet from the Carmelite Monastery in Bruges, Belgium. This antique piece, crafted in the Southern Netherlands around 1635, is a true gem. Constructed from the finest quality European summer oak, this cabinet bears the mark of a master carpenter. It has a warm honey color finish with great patina and deep gloss built up over many years.
The two doors feature beautifully designed geometric panels, elegantly framed. The front showcases three styles adorned with intricately hand-carved angel heads, acanthus leaves, rope and tassel motifs, as well as floral patterns. Remarkably, the cabinet still retains its original lock, complete with a key, and remains largely in its authentic state. The legs have been extended in the past, adding to its unique character.
Inside, you'll find a fixed bench and an extendable bench, providing practical storage options. This remarkable piece embodies the artistry and craftsmanship of its time, while carrying the rich history of the Carmelite Monastery.
The very origin of the Carmelite Order dates back to a group of hermits who settled on Mount Carmel in the 13th century (in present-day Israel). They gathered around a Marian chapel and, most importantly, adopted the Rule written for them by Patriarch Albert of Jerusalem as their way of life. In the 16th century, Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross reformed the Order. Following in their footsteps, we strive to live "in friendship with God" today. We aim to help people around us discover this offer of friendship from God in their own lives. In 1633, the brown-robed friars settled in the 'Hof van Uytkerke' on Ezelstraat in Brugge. The current Carmelite monastery encompasses the original buildings, and the stepped gables can still be seen on the street. To this day, a community of Carmelites continues to reside here.
