About the Item
This early 19th century pine cupboard, likely from the Mid-Atlantic region, showcases the timeless charm of American country furniture. Made from solid pine with a warm, rich patina, the upper cabinet features distinctive scalloped trim around the open display area, painted in a soft interior wash that highlights its folk appeal. Its simple design and honest joinery reflect the utilitarian spirit of the period.
Below, a paneled door cupboard with original wooden knobs and iron strap hinges provides practical enclosed storage. A visible split between the upper and lower sections—caused by seasonal wood shrinkage over time (pictured)—attests to the natural movement of the wood and the authenticity of its early construction. The wear is cosmetic only and does not impact the structural integrity of the piece.
This cupboard would be a wonderful fit in a farmhouse kitchen or dining room, and its understated form also allows it to integrate easily into more modern rustic interiors. A true survivor from early American domestic life, rich with age and character. 68h x 35w x 15d

Ever wonder how large, tall pieces of furniture were moved in and out of the small doorways in 18th-19th century homes?
Beginning about 1740, corner cupboards were very popular storage pieces. Some were built into the room by carpenters so they never had to be moved.
Instead of a rectangular piece of furniture, the corner piece was triangular in the back so it fit into a corner with no wasted space.
Through the years, many of these built-ins have been removed and given new backs.
Most old corner cupboards were made by a cabinetmaker to be moved from house to house.
The top section usually had glass cabinet doors covering several shelves. The silver or dishes inside were arranged to be admired. The bottom section had two wooden cabinet doors...
