About the Item
A rare late Elizabethan / early Jacobean Court Cupboard (also called Livery Cupboard), built in three sections and originating from Northern England (Lancashire / Yorkshire region). Crafted in oak, the piece retains remarkable traces of its original painted decoration:
On the upper section, red strawberries are painted on the panels, a Renaissance motif symbolising fertility, prosperity, and purity.
On the central and lower panels, oak branches with acorns appear. The oak tree, England’s national emblem, represents strength, endurance, and loyalty.
Such cupboards were used in dining halls to display silverware and precious tableware, while also providing storage. The turned balusters and sectional construction are typical of Northern English workshops at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.
A rare and authentic survival of vernacular English furniture, with its original painted symbolism still visible after more than four centuries.
