Unique Late 19th Century Gilt Bronze Mounted Cabinet by François Linke
Located in Long Island City, NY
A unique late 19th century gilt bronze mounted parquetry cabinet by François Linke and Léon Messagé
François Linke and Léon Messagé
This unusual cabinet features a cube parquetry top with a back splash centered with a plume of bronze feathers and flowers, above a long single drawer with a bronze leaf-clasped scallop shell and two handles shaped as wings, the sides headed by foliate and flower-cast clasps. The cabinet was most likely made to store magazines or original phonograph records.
Stamped FL under many of the bronze mounts, the lock stamped CT LINKE/PARIS
Linke was born in Pankraz in Bohemia and was celebrated by the French as one of the greatest ébénistes of meubles de style at the turn of the century. He began his apprenticeship with a Bohemian master at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he toured Austria, settling and working in Vienna for two years. Linke arrived in Paris 1875, and by 1881 he had established his own small workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg St. Antoine. Taking 18th century styles as his starting point and adapting earlier styles to contemporary taste, Linke produced fine quality furniture, steadily expanding his business during the next 20 years. He firmly established his reputation after receiving a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. He continued to use international fairs as a means of exploring new markets, exhibiting at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, the Liege in Belgium and the 1908 Franco-British exhibition in London. Linke’s highly original designs sprang from the Régence and Rococo styles but were imbued with something quite new, Rococo curves were laden with gilt-bronze sculptural mounts in the tradition of A.-C. Boulle (1642-1732) or Charles Cressent (1685-1758). Stylistically, the new designs still adhered to the Rococo; the novelty, however, was Linke’s fusion of the Rococo with the liveliness and the fluidity of the ‘art nouveau’. The Revue called Linke’s creations entierement nouveau, and continued to say that ‘Linke’s stand...

19th Century English Olivewood and Brass Inlaid Cabinet
By Town
Emanuel
Located in London, GB
A William IV cabinet attributed to Town and Emmanuel
Constructed in a strongly grained olivewood and dressed with gold brass inlays and an etched and engraved brass panel; rising from a plinth base, the lockable single door having an inset panel in the manner of Jean Berain, enclosing a shelved interior, and flanked by narrow vertical conforming panels; the apron being dressed with three bronze rosettes, and the Jura Jaune marble is dressed with a three quarter arcaded brass gallery,
circa 1830
The cabinet is illustrated and discussed in Christopher Payne’s “British Furniture 1820 to 1920” published in 2023. Payne singles out the rarity of the olivewood timber used as well as the necessity for hand cutting the large marquetry panel.
Literature:
Payne, Christopher. British Furniture 1820 to 1920 : The Luxury Market. ACC Art Books, 2023, pp. 38-39 (illus. fig. 1.33).
Town and Emanuel
Recorded in the 'Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840', published by the Furniture History Society, as being situated at 103 New Bond Street between 1830 and 1840, and apart from being manufacturers of furniture, also dealt in 'curiosities and antiques'. The late renowned connoisseur Christopher Gilbert records in his 'Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture' London 1997, also published by the Furniture History Society, a writing table in the Transitional manner with similar plaques. Their label reads 'Town and Emanuel, manufacturers of Buhl Marquetrie, Resner (sic) & Carved Furniture, tripods, screens & c. of the finest and most superb designs of the Louis 14th. Shaker Tall Cabinet With Door and Drawers, Steel Cupboard by Jim Rose
By Jim Rose
Located in Chicago, IL
This tall cabinet exemplifies Jim Rose’s legacy at its most distilled and disciplined—an object where verticality, restraint, and material intelligence converge into a quietly commanding presence. The form recalls early American and Shaker cupboards, particularly storage pieces meant to stand apart and serve specific, practical purposes, yet Rose’s execution in steel transforms that lineage into something resolutely contemporary.
The cabinet’s slender proportions and emphatic vertical lines highlight Rose’s sculptural training, giving the piece a bodily, almost architectural stance. The stepped cornice and subtly flared top introduce a sense of ceremony without ornament, while the paneled door and drawers below establish a rhythm of framed surfaces that echo traditional joinery, translated here into metal. As in much of Rose’s work, the steel is finished to suggest age and warmth, dissolving the boundary between industrial material and domestic familiarity.
Functionally precise yet emotionally resonant, the piece reflects Rose’s belief that furniture should feel purpose-built and enduring. The single-door cabinet and drawers below offer a clear hierarchy of use, reinforcing his preference for clarity over excess. Nothing is superfluous; every decision supports balance, usability, and longevity.
Within Rose’s broader body of work, this cabinet stands as a meditation on scale and solitude—a piece that does not dominate a room through size, but through presence. It underscores his enduring contribution to contemporary furniture: proving that steel, when handled with patience and respect for tradition, can carry the same sense of history, dignity, and quiet service as the finest wooden furniture.

Bio
Jim Rose (1966–2023) was an American furniture maker, artist, and metalworker whose work occupied a singular position between studio craft, sculpture, and functional design. Born in Beech Grove, Indiana, Rose trained as a sculptor, earning his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1988 after a brief period of study at Bard College. This sculptural foundation shaped his approach to furniture, in which proportion, structure, and surface were treated with the same rigor as utility, and everyday objects were understood as vehicles for aesthetic and ethical values.
Working primarily in steel—often reclaimed or salvaged—Rose challenged conventional expectations of furniture materials. Through brushing, waxing, and patination, he developed surfaces that softened steel’s industrial associations, imparting warmth, depth, and a sense of age. His work drew on diverse historical and cultural sources, including Shaker furniture, Asian cabinetry, and the quilts of Gee’s Bend, yet these influences were never literal. Instead, Rose translated their underlying principles—clarity, restraint, repetition, and balance—into a contemporary language grounded in material honesty.
Based for much of his career in Wisconsin, Rose was closely associated with the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, including participation in its Arts/Industry residency program. His furniture and objects were widely exhibited in galleries and design fairs across the United States and featured in publications such as American Craft and Architectural Digest. His work entered both private and institutional collections during his lifetime, reflecting a sustained engagement with collectors, curators, and designers.
Rose’s furniture is distinguished by its emphasis on durability, adaptability, and use. Cabinets, chairs, benches, and tables were engineered for longevity and daily life, incorporating practical features such as steel drawer glides, modular construction, and discreet accommodations for modern technology. This functional intelligence was inseparable from his broader philosophy: furniture, for Rose, was a form of quiet service, meant to support human activity while carrying forward the history embedded in its materials.
Jim Rose’s work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Following his death in 2023, his legacy endures through a body of work that demonstrates how contemporary furniture can be both materially rigorous and deeply humane—objects shaped by patience, integrity, and an enduring respect for use.

Louis XVI Style Gris Trianon
Trianon Gray
Vitrine / Cabinet by François Linke
Located in Madrid, ES
This rare 19th century Gris Trianon (Trianon Gray) Louis XVI style Vitrine / display cabinet / china cabinet by François Linke is constructed of oak and has its original (and unusual) painted grey-green finish. The vitrine was part of a larger group of French Gris Trianon furniture purchased from an aristocratic palace in Madrid, Spain. Please note the illustration of this actual vitrine, showing it in the palace dining room, with the pictures above. The split front cabinet has four glass shelves and a fully mirrored back, and features finely carved neoclassical decorative elements such as rosettes, raised and three-dimensional hanging laurel garlands and beautifully scrolled legs. On the interior plate of the functioning lock (key included) can be found the stamp of influential furniture maker François Linke, "CT LINKE SERRURERIE PARIS". This speaks to the vitrine's beautiful design and high quality of its construction. The color "Gris Trianon" is named for the Petit Trianon à Versailles, a neoclassical style château located on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles and best known as the private retreat of Marie-Antoinette, where this particular shade was used extensively for wall coverings, decorative elements and furniture. "Trianon Gray" has a continued association with luxury, notable as the color of canvas chosen for the first Louis Vuitton...
