In the Netherlands, cupboards with this configuration, two doors beneath a single long drawer, are known as “vertigoes” or “vertical cabinets” and we don’t see nearly as many of them as we used to. This one is a splendid example. The drawer is delicately dovetailed and its front is sanded to a smooth chamfer. It opens on brass and zinc teardrop pulls and stands a little proud of the doors. The front corners of the case are fluted with a hardwood corbel at the top, placed above a short split spindle. At the base is an elongated pyramid applique. The doors have raised panels and they open ninety degrees on pivot hinges. The interior contains three original shelves, fully adjustable on wooden sawtooth track. A truly handsome piece, the wood here has only small knots, a pretty grain pattern and an outstanding color, hand-polished to a warm honey glow.
