About the Item
16th Century Spanish Bargueño, Polychromed Wood
A rare and evocative Spanish bargueño dating to the 16th century, retaining traces of its original polychrome decoration. The fall-front lid opens to reveal a fitted interior of drawers with iron pulls and escutcheons, once used to store valuables, documents, and personal treasures.
This example stands on a later trestle base, providing the ideal height for use and display. Its surface, worn and layered with centuries of history, preserves tones of ochre, russet, and earthen pigments, creating a richly textured patina that reflects the spirit of Renaissance Spain.
Early bargueños of this type are scarce, especially with their original iron hardware intact. This piece offers collectors a museum-quality furnishing that embodies the elegance and practicality of Spain’s Golden Age.
