There was a time when mice routinely found a way to one’s bread supply. If you were not of a mind to share, hanging a secure box off the floor was a good start. The Renaissance Revival, or Neo-Gothic style of this wall-mounted oak piece, expresses the significant resurgence of interest during the late 19th- early 20th centuries in Medieval and Renaissance design elements.
Characterized by intricate designs, the extensive, deeply cut carving on the header, the doors and the back panel of the lower shelf offer standout examples of the style. The repeating circular motifs and scrolling foliage are complex and highly detailed.
This cabinet would have been a high-quality, decorative item designed to showcase wealth and an appreciation for historical design in a Victorian-era home.
