About the Item
A finely constructed 19th-century English portable writing slope, crafted in richly figured burlwood with a contrasting mahogany crossbanded edge and a central brass escutcheon. The hinged top opens to reveal a sloped writing surface lined in green felt (likely a later replacement), and fitted with compartments for writing instruments, paper, and correspondence. The desk retains both original cut glass inkwells and features a hidden compartment beneath the pen tray—hallmarks of quality construction during the Victorian period.
The exterior showcases beautifully bookmatched burl veneers and rounded corners, with dovetailed joints, brass hinges, and a locking lower drawer. The box reflects the refined craftsmanship and portable function prized in the gentleman’s library or for travel during the Victorian era.
Dimensions:
6.5" H × 17" W × 10" D (closed)
Materials:
Burlwood veneers, mahogany, brass fittings, green felt, original glass inkwells
Condition:
Fair antique condition. Top does not close flush and tends to stick slightly. Scattered veneer losses, wood cracks, and finish wear throughout. The felt writing surface has been replaced. Structurally sound and complete with working compartments and inkwells.
Provenance:
From a Private Collection at 1199 Park Avenue, New York City
Attribution Note:
While unsigned, this box shares stylistic and constructional traits with the work of James Allen and D. Edwards
Co., leading London makers of fine writing boxes in the mid-19th century. Features such as the original inkwells, hidden compartment, brass cartouche, and rounded corners suggest a workshop operating circa 1840–1870 catering to affluent professionals and travelers. The quality of the burl veneer and internal fittings points to a high-end retailer or outfitter.
