About the Item

This is a superb quality bird's-eye maple writing table in Gillows style, having a useful frieze drawer, on elegant tapering fluted legs. We cannot find a Gillows stamp on this item, but the quality is such that I have no hesitation in attributing it to Gillows. This elegant antique desk is freestanding, beautifully crossbanded in mahogany and will make a wonderful addition to one room in your home. Condition: In excellent condition having been beautifully restored in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 74 x Width 106 x Depth 56 Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 5 inches x Width 3 feet, 6 inches x Depth 1 foot, 10 inches Gillow Co. - was originally founded in Lancaster in 1730. Gillow’s of Lancaster was a household name in Victorian Britain, and the firm exported furniture throughout the Empire. Key to the company’s success was the dynamic father and son team at its core. The London branch was opened in 1775. Among Gillow’s most successful pieces during this period were those made in the Neoclassical style from original drawings by Robert Adam. In the period 1813-1820 the Gillow family gradually withdrew from personal involvement with the business. In 1897 Gillow Co. merged with a Liverpool firm and they henceforth traded as Waring Gillow. bird's-eye Maple occurs primarily in Sugar Maple and is a very hard wood with divergent grain structure caused by the presence of the Birdseyes. In the days when all furniture was made essentially by hand, bird's-eye Maple was used by only the most capable cabinetmakers. These artisans had developed the tools and skills to work and finish bird's-eye Maple successfully. Antique furniture made out of bird's-eye Maple is rare and beautiful. The divergent grain that makes bird's-eye maple beautiful also makes it difficult to work. Early woodworking machines ran at low rpms and had only 2 knives per cutterhead. This often produced bird's-eye surfaces that were chipped and torn. It took many hours of hand planing and scraping to get these surfaces to a high sheen. This limited the use of bird's-eye maple to projects whose value could justify the extra labour cost. Examples of this are Fine furniture and musical instruments.
