About the Item
A very good carved walnut Swiss German Black Forest writing box, folding desk desk, Brienz Switzerland, circa 1890.
The slant front is finely carved in relief with a design of quills, books, pens, a ruler and pair of compasses all intertwined with carved edelweiss, the locking top also with carved foliate, below is an intricately engraved brass lock-plate, the key is also present.
The box opens to reveal a writing slope with a blue velvet writing surface, the fitted interior with the original glass inkwells with carved top and a pen case with a carved lid, there are also three stepped
carved files for letters and envelopes.
The writing box also has carved decoration to each side, the back is also decorated with incised carving of scrolls and maps with more entwined edelweiss.
The condition is very good, there is no damage or restoration noted.
