About the Item

Polish secretary made of pyramid mahogany, polished. Made circa 1840 in the Biedermeier style. Beautiful proportions, expensive veneer, moderate ornamentation. Native bourgeois origin. The main decoration of the desk is a long, central drawer integrated into a veneered top, supported on slim turned legs. The composition closes from the top with a top with a suitcase of drawers and cabinets, which acts as a secretary. A desk with a drawer and an additional retractable top under the main top. The inner top is padded with green pea-leather. Main drawer without internal divisions. The high setting consists of four cabinets and a centrally located pair of doors. The keys were made of bone. Operating two-step locks. Massive elements such as legs and shelves were made of solid mahogany. The furniture has many drawers and lockers that can accommodate documents, stationery and small items of the owner. Particular attention is attracted by the setting with a large number of cabinets and an additional hidden top. All drawers and shelf locked. Rolled legs are an additional decorative element. The decoration of this desk is its restrained, slightly wavy form and the rhythm of vertical and horizontal elements. The whole is characterized by harmonious proportions and beautiful form. The secretary comes with a set of 3 keys. Secretary after conservation The furniture of that period was a simplified version of the French directorate and empire style furniture, as well as English furniture in the Adam and Sheraton styles. The emphasis was on functionality and convenience, as a rule, extravagance was avoided in projects. Moderate ornamentation, subordinated to the utility of the equipment, the use of smooth surfaces and good craftsmanship are the hallmarks of Biedermeier style furniture. There were two types of this style in Poland: the urban style closer to the original and the so-called Noble Biedermeier. The latter was oriented towards tradition and was to show the then aspirations of aristocracy. Hence the Biedermeier style was the quintessence of interior design in many Polish courts.
