About the Item
Elegant mid-nineteenth-century travel desk, made of briarwood with fine bois de rose threading. A small masterpiece of cabinet making, designed to combine practicality and beauty, cared for in every detail both outside and inside. The top opens to reveal the blue velvet-covered writing surface with its compartments dedicated to pens, inkwells and correspondence. There is no shortage of a secret drawer and concealed compartments designed to store documents or small valuables. Of the two original inkwells, one is still present, while the other is missing. A refined yet functional object, it testifies to the taste and lifestyle of educated travelers in the nineteenth century. Perfectly intact, it retains the charm and patina of time.
