Early Art Deco Executive Office Set by Gauthier Poinsignon Circa 1920

About the Item

As at home in a 21st Century office as it would have been in the early 1920's, this custom-built transitional Art Nouveau-to-Art Deco executive office set is impressive in the photos and even more so in person. It's created by hand from mahogany with delicate 'mother-of-pearl' stringing. The front of the desk duplicates the design on the bookcase. The middle door is a plate of bevelled glass. This is a superior piece by a world-renowned design team of Parisian ebinistes. This piece bears the stamp of this famous group. Camille Gauthier was a cabinet-maker born in Norroy-les-Pont-à-Mousson 1870. Gauthier attended the Nancy School of Fine Arts and after completing his education at the Paris Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in 1891 he worked for Louis Majorelle as a decorator from 1894-1900. Many of Gauthiers pieces were shown at the 1900 Paris World Fair. The Following year, he left Majorelle’s company and partnered with tapestry-maker Paul Poinsignon to create the Gauthier-Poinsignon Company. Clearly influenced by Majorelle’s art-nouveau style in their early works, the Gauthier-Poinsignon company differed from Majorelle’s in producing technical and customized pieces for clients. Their modern workshops, galleries and catalogs helped the company reach a wider ranks of customers than that of Gallé and Majorelle and provide a modern style of furniture. Camille Gauthier Was a member of the Ecole de Nancy Board of Management since 1901. This desk set is contemporary in design and could work in any large executive office with style.
