About the Item

This substantial console table perfectly embodies the Neoclassical aesthetic of the Louis XVI style, presenting a harmonious composition of architectural rigour and lavish decoration. It testifies to the masterful craftsmanship of the Parisian Menuisiers of the late 19th century. The frame is painted in an elegant, light Gris-Crème finish, which beautifully complements the cool, profiled slab of white veined marble. The striking contrast is created by the rich, sculptural gilding, which has been applied to the finely carved wooden appliqués, authentically recalling the splendor of the 18th century. The apron (tablier) is richly decorated with ormolu appliqués: the centre features flowing volute foliage (rinceaux), flanked by powerful floral rosettes at the corners. The base is further animated by a graceful, descending garland of stylized fruits and leaves. The furniture stands on four characteristic, tapered legs (pieds en gaine), which are also painted and adorned with vertical, giltwood chains of bellflowers (chutes de campanules). This piece possesses the decorative authority that makes it an ideal focal point in any discerning interior. The quality of the carving and the density of the gilding attest to the high standing of this French manufacture. Condition: Excellent overall condition with age-appropriate patina; the paint finish and the rich gilding are well preserved.
