About the Item
English 18th Century Spinet Case by Crang
Hancock London Converted Writing Desk
This is a fine example of the English spinet in its most fully developed form. Rare ca. 1760 pentagonal or bentside spinet case by John Crang Hancock, London. He was considered to be one of the finest makers of spinets. The trestle stand is of the period. The legs terminate in wood casters. It is inscribed on an original plaque with the name of Crang et Hancock. The case is veneered in mahogany with harewood stringing and tulipwood crossbanding. It features ornamental shaped brass hinges, hasp and lock plate. It was a clever idea to have this spinet converted into a writing desk for a more practical use. Taking out the keyboard manual, changed the purpose without diminishing the integrity of this beautiful furniture.
