About the Item

A handsome and high quality French 19th century Louis XV st. Tulipwood, Kingwood and Ormolu desk, attributed to Durand. This exceptional Bureau Plat is raised by four elegantly inlaid cabriole legs, richly decorated by front and side mottled Ormolu chutes, and ending with wrap around Ormolu sabots. At the top of each leg are impressive and highly detailed scrolled Ormolu mounts of rams heads amidst a mottled frame with top acanthus leaves. The arbalest shaped apron displays three drawers with mottled Ormolu trims surrounding the contours of each drawer. All three drawers have an elegant Tulipwood inlaid parquetry bordered by a similar mottled Ormolu trims. Above is the fitted gold tooled burgundy leather top surrounded by a Tulipwood border before the impressive Ormolu edge guard. High quality throughout, and finished on all sides for placement in the center of a room. Gervais-Maximilien-Eugène Durand, Paris (1839-1920) Maison Durand was established in 1870 Paris, producing top quality 18th century style furniture. Durand participated at the Exposition Universelle in 1889, where he received a silver medal. Durand was commended as a very talented and modest cabinetmaker creating furniture of the highest caliber, not only the creator but also the designer of each piece, and notably following in the footsteps of Masters such as Beurdeley and Dasson. In 1890 his son Frederic-Louis joined him and the firm was renamed Durand et Fils
