About the Item

A French Louis XVI style bureau plat, crafted from solid maple and sourced in Provence, France. The rectangular top is framed with a molded and beveled edge and refinished to a rich dark brown tone that brings out the grain and depth of the wood. The design features an open kneehole front, with drawers positioned along both sides: two drawer fronts per side, of which the outer drawers are functional and the inner panels are decorative. The reverse is finished with a full arrangement of false drawers, allowing the desk to stand elegantly in the center of a room. Brass ring pulls and sabots highlight the neoclassical form, while shaped corner brackets lend a subtle architectural detail. We have structurally restored the piece, ensuring it is strong and stable, and refinished the surface in a rich dark brown finish. The two functional side drawers open smoothly, providing convenient storage for writing implements or desk accessories. A very high quality French 18th century Louis XVI period mahogany and ormolu desk or writing table, signed C. Mauter. The desk is raised by elegant circular tapered fluted legs with fine fitted ormolu sabots and richly chased fitted foliate chandelles. Above each leg are lovely fluted block reserves with additional finely detailed fitted chandelles. The scalloped shaped apron displays three drawers, each decorated with most attractive ormolu keyhole escutcheons.
