About the Item

Italian bargain on table. Walnut wood and rosewood, hawksbill, bronze in color and gilded, 17th century. Uncovered sample desk located on claws with ball and with handles on the sides. The front presents the central part advanced with chapel; and the sides four drawers each; finishes the work a corridor ornated with vegetal elements realized in bronze. The bureau or table bargueña that supports it is of turned legs secured by lower chambrana (also turned and with a dice in the center) between itself and to the cover thanks to curved metallic fasteners finished in volute. The legs of the bargueño have been carved in the form of bird claw synthesized on ball, something very typical of 17th century. The decoration of the sides is reduced to diamonds made in marquetry by means of fillets inlaid in dark wood on clear, element that is repeated inside the chapel: the top has this elegant geometric decoration, and so do the five drawers that you discover. As usual in the Baroque Baroque, the center of the exhibition is where the decoration is concentrated, generally made of hawksbill areas framed or highlighted with dark wood moldings and surrounded by sinuous curved lines made in inlaid, always maintaining the symmetry. The chapel follows an architectural composition: lower basement, facade between four columns with pronounced ecstasy and a niche in the center with the figure of (Hercules or Heracles) fighting against Caco, the giant that terrorized the Palatine Hill before the foundation of Rome. The drawers of the sides are highlighted by the shields of the locks, made in gilded bronze. The general scheme of furniture is very common throughout the European Baroque and this compositional clarity would not be broken until the arrival of the Rococo. All the decorative elements, based on the Classic tradition, are characteristic of this type of furniture: sample desks discovered with the scheme of the present are known and realized throughout Europe, with a great flamenco influence in its creation, being the Italians the most valued for its decoration. The practice of using hawksbills in furniture resurfaced in Europe during the seventeenth century, placing this material on reddish backgrounds normally and applying gold underneath very often. The high price and high demand for furniture with sea turtle shells can be explained by the scarcity of the material, which had to be imported (usually from Central America) and a highly specialized workforce was required for its work."
