About the Item
Large wall counter in solid oak, bronze, and glass tops, from the former customs buildings (“Toldboden”) at the port of Aarhus in Denmark, built in 1897 by architect Hack Kampmann (1856-1920). The top is flat, then slopes slightly, ending in six deep drawers. It is topped by an ornate bronze tube with a dark green patina and fleurons decoration, which supports glass shelves. The drawers also have bronze handles, some with old locks without keys. The drawers are deep, sometimes partitioned, with traces and ink stains inside some of them. Originally fixed to the wall, probably using brackets (3 recent metal brackets are provided), it is likely that this piece of furniture dates from the late 19th century, like the building from which it comes.
There are signs of wear, small holes on the top under the glass shelves, probably for lighting fixtures that were attached there. (The glass shelves are probably not original? New ones can be cut to size if necessary). The building still exists today. Listed since 1918, it no longer houses customs but a restaurant and other premises.
